When Verdi wrote his 'Requiem' it was declared a work of genius by Brahms and - unusually for sacred music - went on a tour of opera theatres. It commemorates the life of novelist Alessandro Manzoni for whom Verdi had a deep admiration. It's an impressively dramatic piece. The music moves from hushed undertones to the tremendous roar of the massed chorus. Simone Young will conduct while Rosamund Illing, Bernadette Cullen, Bruce Martin and the Welsh-born Dennis O'Neill will sing.
